Dena Barnes was elected NFRW member-at-large at the 37th Biennial Convention in Louisville, Ky., and took office in January 2014. She is the director of NFRW Region 8, which includes New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.
Barnes started her political career in 1986 as club treasurer. In 1997, she was elected to the Summerfield Town Council and served as mayor from 2001-2005. She is currently mayor pro tem.
Barnes served as North Carolina FRW area representative and central region vice president. She served as president of the Greater Greensboro Republican Women's Club from 2006-2008. Under her leadership, membership flourished. She received the Tribute to Women Award from Greater Greensboro in 2008, and was named NCFRW Honorary Life Member in 2009. She has worked to elect Republicans by targeting candidate recruiting and training.
She has served the Republican Party as precinct chair, 6th District treasurer, delegate to the 2012 Republican National Convention, and on the Platform Committee and the Central Committee of the North Carolina Republican Party.
Barnes served as president of the North Carolina FRW from 2010-2013. In 2011, she traveled to Israel with then-NFRW President Sue Lynch and won the NFRW Ronald Reagan Leadership Award. She is proud of the work the North Carolina Republican women have done to turn the state back RED. Barnes is an NFRW Regent and previously served on the NFRW Membership and Leadership Development committees.
Barnes is married to Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes. They have two daughters and eight grandchildren. She graduated from Grimsley High School in 1969 and Guilford Technical Community College in 1979 with an associate degree in nursing.
