PRESIDENT'S BIOGRAPHY

Marcella “Marcie” Becker Thompson was raised in a Wisconsin farming community and first became involved in Republican politics in the Twin Cities by volunteering on Dwight Eisenhower’s 1956 reelection campaign. She was working as Department Secretary of Agricultural Education at the University of Minnesota.

While at the university, Marcie also served as Secretary of the Minnesota State Fair Education Department. After her first son, Mark, was born in 1961, she worked in private business before and after her late husband, Russ, was transferred to Kansas City, Mo. Transfers to Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio, followed, during which time her second son, David, was born and she was a full-time homemaker and volunteer for church, school, and youth activities.

After moving to Indianapolis, she worked on the staff of Mayor William H. Hudnut III for eight years. She earned a bachelor’s degree with highest distinction in English from Indiana University after attending college part-time for nine and a half years. She was an adjunct instructor in the English department of Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, a free-lance writer and editor, and eventually returned to government employment, working in the Marion County Treasurer’s Office and the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works.

She has been heavily involved in Republican politics and with Republican women’s groups since she moved to Indianapolis in 1971. In addition to serving on the board of the local federated women’s group and on the board of the Indiana Federation of Republican Women, having been Bylaws Chair, Parliamentarian, Scholarships Chair, District Director, and First Vice President before assuming the Presidency in September 2006, she is a Precinct Committeewoman and previously served as President of an independent Republican women’s group in Indianapolis. She has worked as a volunteer or paid staff member on many political campaigns and has been a delegate to State GOP Conventions.

She served as President of the Ben Davis High School PTA, started the USO Council of Indianapolis which maintains a welcome center at Indianapolis International Airport, served as President, Secretary, and Treasurer of her Kiwanis club, and has been a board member of other civic and charitable organizations.

FEDERATION HISTORY

The Indiana Federation is a charter state of the NFRW and is organized into nine districts. Republican women's clubs have existed in Indiana for more than 100 years. The Indiana Federation's principal goal is to elect as many Republicans as possible. In addition to fundraising and working in all state Republican campaigns, each year two $500 scholarships are awarded to Indiana undergraduate Republicans majoring in political science, government or economics. Projects include the Betty Rendel Campaign School and the Indiana Tribute to Women. Members also provide community service through mentoring programs and Caring for Indiana/Working partners.
