Ellen Greeke's interest in becoming politically active was sparked
several years ago at a fundraiser she attended for the U.S.
congressional candidate in her district. She is a member of Knox
County RWC, for which she served as secretary and president. She
recently completed two terms as secretary of the Knox County
Republican Committee, chaired the GOTV program for two election
cycles, and began an annual summer sunset cruise fundraiser four
years ago. She also served two terms as recording secretary for
MFRW.
She has been a delegate to three state conventions, for which she
served as secretary of her county caucus. As MFRW president, she is
now a member of the State Committee.
Ellen and her husband, Woody, moved from Massachusetts to Maine in
1977 to pursue their love of dog sledding and raising AKC registered
Siberian Huskies. She received a bachelor's degree in education from
the University of Maine at Farmington and a master's degree in
educational administration from the University of Southern
Mississippi. She taught second through fifth grades in western
Maine.
In 1995, Ellen was the recipient of the Presidential Award for
Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, and Woody and she
spent an incredible week in Washington, D.C. She later became the
principal of a K-8 school, retiring in 2003.
In addition to enjoying life on the Maine coast, Ellen is the
secretary and newsletter editor for the Association of Teachers of
Mathematics in Maine, historian for the local library, and a member
of fraternal organizations, including the Grange.
While researching for a project suitable for both the county committee and local women’s club, she found a link to Operation Paperback on the NFRW web site. Ellen organized an ongoing drive to collect new and gently used paperback books for our brave troops stationed around the world, sending almost 2,000 books to our soldiers.
