On the last Sunday of September, Gold Star Mothers and military families who lost their spouse, child, or parent, specifically those who died during active duty, will gather around the country to recognize and honor their fallen service members. The distinction of being a Gold Star Mother or family member is not something these individuals want but they bear that title with pride for their loved one's sacrifice.

The term “Gold Star” originated during World War I when Americans displayed flags in their homes, businesses, schools, and churches with a blue star for each of their family members serving in the military. If any of those family members died during their military service, the family would stitch a gold star over the blue star in honor of their fallen loved ones.

There are thousands of Gold Star Mothers and family members but only about a 1,000 belong to American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.  This organization was formed and incorporated in Washington, D.C., in 1929, obtaining a federal charter from Congress; it now has affiliated groups throughout the nation.

Being part of this group is all about the support they give each other as they manage the loss of their loved one. In addition, these members continue to support the military, raising funds for veterans, active service members and their families, and especially for other Gold Star Mothers and families. They visit hospitals, nursing homes, and veterans at home. When performing their mission, they will wear white to symbolize peace, which is what each of them prays for. White also reflects both the sacrifices of their children and the grace, purity and innocence of those who have died so young to create a world of freedom.

All Gold Star Families can access the following benefits: tax benefits to surviving family members via the HEART Act or the Heroes Earnings Assistance and Relief Tax Act of 2008; additional life insurance and vesting in retirement plan benefits; and funeral and burial entitlements.

The Gold Star Mother’s non-profit organization holds an annual convention and hosts events centered around Gold Star Mother’s Day and Veterans Day. It also partners with Wreaths Across America each December to coordinate wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at over 1,200 locations in the U.S. and abroad.
