This is a very fine line. The school has a responsibility to teach and guide journalism students. The student newspaper generally operates under a teacher advisor from journalism or English. This teacher is the responsible adult in the room. They should support and advise the students, much like a real editor or publisher in a newspaper. And like the editor and publisher in a real paper, they have the final say-so in publication. That's real life. To teach students they are autonomous teaches them contrary to the real world. That being said, the advisor shouldn't shut content down because it is controversial. They should shut it down if it is biased, not well sourced, or controversial just for the sake of controversy. If the advisor is acting inappropriately, that is another issue.

Students should be taught to report the truth, controversial or not. Part of their assignment should include their method of fact checking. By definition, a student is learning how to. By limiting what they can report, it limits their future view of what is or is not acceptable based of the teacher's viewpoint. I would not focus limits on topic. I would limit published stories based on the comprehensive research completed to write the story.

The students should be permitted to write articles on any topic, but whether they appear in the student newsletter is up to the faculty advisor. These are students, after all, and their judgement still needs to be refined.

That said, the faculty advisor should permit most of what the students submit. That should include articles that may be considered controversial if the article points out both sides of the issue. But we are living in an age when it's been deemed "controversial" to fly the American flag or wear a prom dress that hints of "cultural appropriation,". Thus, we need a mature and reasonable adult to make such decisions.

As others have said here, students should be allowed to report facts. They can also be allowed to editorialize on controversial subjects with the understanding that they claim their statements and differentiate fact and opinion.

I feel that's the right place to raise our voice for different issues that happened in society right now. I always recommend people to do this on different social media platforms for good deads.

I think it is always right to ask for consent from the school admin before you post something out publicly, unless it is an alarming scandal about a school and have to voice it out.

As a respect to the school and all it's faculty and staff, and to avoid false information as well, I think it is advised to always seek for approval from the school authorities.

An extraordinary offer! I've recently sent this onto an associate who had been directing a little schoolwork on this.
