Club Sponsors Third Annual Eighth Grade Essay Contest

From January to April, Republican Women of Worcester County was busy with the annual Eighth Grade Essay Contest. This contest is open to all 8th-grade students in public and private schools, as well as home-schooled children in Worcester County.

This year, the essay challenge asked students to imagine they were American colonists in the 1770s, outraged by King George III’s actions. Students were asked to write a “break-up” letter to the monarch and explain why they were concerned that their unalienable rights were being violated. The essays were required to define unalienable rights, describe at least two ways these rights were violated, and explain how the King’s decrees affected life as a colonist.

A total of 18 essays were submitted by students of Most Blessed Sacrament (MBS), Worcester Preparatory School (WPS), and Stephen Decatur Middle School (SDMS). From these entries, three winners were selected.

During the April general meeting, the winners read their essays and received their certificates and monetary awards. Winners were 1st Place SDMS Natasha Gonzalez-DeRoche $250, 2nd Place SDMS Lily Riehl $100, and 3rd Place MBS Brynn Wanner $50, respectively.
