Club Honors Liberty Tree Scholarship Award Recipient

Colonial Mount Vernon Republican Women of Virginia hosted a reception in August to honor its first recipient of the Liberty Tree Scholarship Award, Maria Kasbaoui. Guests at the reception included Maria and her family, CMVRW members, and local Republican dignitaries and candidates.

Maria graduated from John Lewis High School this past spring with a 4.5 GPA and a combination International Baccalaureate degree and traditional high school diploma. In addition to her excellent academic record, she served as President of the National Honor Society, played violin and basketball, and was manager for the track and field team.

Applicants for the Liberty Tree Scholarship were asked to write an essay about the separation of powers within the U.S. government. Anna Urman, the Chair of the Scholarship Committee, read the essay aloud followed by a presentation of the award and check. The CMVRW Scholarship Committee members included Anna Urman, Jane Gandee, Susan Bradley, and Cathy Gillespie.

Maria will begin her first year at the University of Virginia this fall. She is considering pursuing a degree in engineering. We look forward to staying in touch with Maria and her family and wish her every success in the future.
