Caring for America: Fisher House Foundation, Fort Bliss, Texas

For its first quarter project, the newly formed Federated Republican Women of El Paso County (FRWoEPC) took on its state federation’s (TFRW) statewide service project locally with the Fisher House at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in Fort Bliss TX. Fort Bliss is the largest installation in the United States Army Forces Command and second-largest in the Army overall, with the largest being the nearby White Sands Missile Range.

Texas Federation of Republican Women’s statewide Service Project, Fisher House Foundation, is a charity that builds “comfort homes” where military and veterans’ families can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the hospital. These homes are located at military and VA medical centers around the world. Since its launching, the program has saved military and veterans’ families approximately half a billion dollars in out of pocket expenses for lodging and transportation. This ‘home away from home’ for families of patients receiving medical care at any of our major military installations, VA medical centers, and local hospitals around the world, is customarily located within walking distance of the medical facility serving our veterans.

Following its first monthly meeting held on February 16, 2021, Federated Republican Women of El Paso County (FRWoEPC) reached out to its members and the community and got to work on the needs indicated by Fisher House Local Manager, Alice Coleman. On February 21st, this newly formed group gifted a whopping $825 in Walmart gift cards to the Fisher House at William Beaumont. The cards will be used by the families to purchase food during their stay. This was FRWoEPC’s first event since being chartered by the state federation (TFRW) on February 5, 2021.

Fisher House Local Manager, Alice Coleman, stated this was the first donation the local Fisher House in El Paso County TX had received since the inception of COVID measures in March 2020. The FRW of EPC was delighted to share the experience with TFRW President Glynis Chester and TFRW Vice President for Campaign Activities Corinne Miklosh.

Federated Republican Women of El Paso County looks forward to continuing its support to Alice and the Fisher House in El Paso County as it continues to “BE the CHANGE” in its local community.

What a wonderful event for such a deserving charity! I am so proud of FRWofEPC for forming this new club and jumping into community service so quickly for our state federation's charity. They were chartered on February 5th and raised $825 for their Caring for America project by February 16th! This club was formed for the purpose of serving the entire county of El Paso, all 1,051 square miles of it! They will be meeting all over the county to serve the many areas it encompasses.

Congratulations to FRWofEPC, one of six new TFRW clubs already chartered this year!

Jennifer Howell, TFRW Deputy Regional President, Region X.
