Club Celebrates 70th Anniversary; Tributes Presented by State Legislature

The banquet hall at Mulligan’s Pointe in Georgetown buzzed with energy on September 28 as Republican candidates and activists joined SCRWC club members in celebrating 70 years of advocacy and charitable giving in lower Delaware.

Marilyn Booker, President of the SCRWC and also Sussex County GOP Chair, opened ceremonies with observations on how involved women are in the political process since the founding of the club in 1952. This was the goal of Lillian Martin when she founded the organization. Between the current House and Senate, women represent 27% of the membership. Of note are the significant gains Republican women made in the House in the most recent election cycle. Of the 27 newly elected woman representatives, two-thirds are Republicans.  “How is that for taking an active role in the political process!” she exclaimed.

One of the highlights of the evening occurred when representatives of both the Delaware House and Senate, respectively, presented the Club with proclamations signed by their members.

Presenting the tribute from the Senate side was Senator Brian Pettyjohn from District 19. Presenting for the House were representatives Ron Gray (38th District), Ruth Briggs King (37th District), and Rich Collins, (41st District).

Festivities continued with a rousing vocal performance by Sussex County Republican Register of Wills, Greg Fuller. One of his two selections, “I did it God’s way,” left not a dry eye in the house.

After a dinner of 1950s favorites— BBQ chicken, hot dogs and cheeseburgers, ambrosia salad and green beans Amandine—sixteen Delaware Republican candidates came up to the podium, one at a time, to receive campaign donations and say a few words.

As the event came to an end, all present left with high hopes for significant Republican victories statewide on November 8th.
