From the NFRW Armed Services Committee

In the 1800s, there was a Citation Star for gallantry. Later, the Silver Star Medal was established. It is our third highest medal, awarded to those who showed distinguished valor during combat.

Silver Star Banner Day on May 1 represents all the sacrifices of those wounded, ill, or dying, as well as those awarded the Silver Star Medal. The colors blue represents “hope” and silver “gallantry." Many families put a Silver Star decal in their window to honor their loved ones who were hurt in combat.

That's a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by so many. It's easy to forget the individual stories behind those medals and banners. Knowing the significance of the colors and the day itself makes it even more meaningful. I appreciate learning about Silver Star Banner Day and the history behind the Silver Star Medal. It's important to remember and honor their service.
