100 Years of Votes for Women

Members of the Republican Women of Purpose of Tennessee were excited to hear about the Women Suffrage Centennial at the March meeting. TFRW President Barbara Trautman shared Tennessee's pivotal history and the courageous women integral in leading up to the passage of the 19th Amendment. This is also known as the War of the Roses.

Additionally, there were several Suffragette members marching through the audience. The Suffragettes shared a few words from Mary Poppins.

"We're clearly soldiers in petticoats
And dauntless crusaders for woman's votes
Though we adore men individually
We agree that as a group they're rather stupid!

Cast off the shackles of yesterday!
Shoulder to shoulder into the fray!
Our daughters' daughters will adore us
And they'll sing in grateful chorus
'Well done, Sister Suffragette!'

From Kensington to Billingsgate
One hears the restless cries!
From ev'ry corner of the land:
"Womankind, arise!"
Political equality and equal rights with men!
Take heart! For Missus Pankhurst has been clapped in irons again!

No more the meek and mild subservients we!
We're fighting for our rights, militantly!
Never you fear!

So, cast off the shackles of yesterday!
Shoulder to shoulder into the fray!
Our daughters' daughters will adore us
And they'll sing in grateful chorus
'Well done! Well done!
Well done Sister Suffragette!'"

Tennessee printed the newest Blue Book with a yellow cover in honor of the 19th Amendment. Every attendee received a special edition "yellow" blue book provided by State Rep. Mark White and information about the War of the Roses. Every table was graced with a vase of yellow roses. The meeting made every attendee proud to be from Tennessee!
