Houston County Republican Women continues to move forward with unity and opportunity to do our part to accomplish positive things for our Republican Party.

At HCRW’s last meeting of the year in October, informative, interesting speakers were Judge Patrick H. Davenport, Probate Judge; Brandon Shoupe, District 4, Houston County Commission, Chairman of the Houston County Republican Executive Committee, State Executive Committee and Vice Chair of Congressional, District 2; Barry Moore, Candidate for 2nd Congressional District Alabama U.S. Congress; Paul Lee, State Representative of AL, spoke on behalf of Tommy Tuberville, Candidate for Alabama U.S. Senate; Judge, Beth Kellum, AL Criminal Court of Appeals; and Heather Thomas, Rescue Captain of the Rehobeth Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

HCRW’s “Caring for America” projects were collecting and packing small individual toiletries for the Wiregrass Children’s Home and the House of Ruth. These items will be delivered in January. Instead of “Ringing the Bell” this year, we donated to the Salvation Army’s project “Adopt a Blue Kettle.” Our HCRW donated $500 plus an extra $100 over that amount. W’s also participated and donated “Wreaths Across America” in honor of our Veterans.

The Houston County Republican Headquarters was a huge success! There were so many kind, interesting, and enthusiastic people that came in to visit. Sue O’Donnell, HCRW member, Volunteer, and 3rd Vice President, shared with us a story about two news men from Brussels, Belgium. They came by to interview people on the upcoming election. They filmed and spoke with several individuals, one being HCRW member, Louise Garrett. They asked her why and how long she had been a Republican, the difference between our two parties, and her reasons for supporting Donald Trump. Louise expressed her thoughts in a knowledgeable, articulate way that certainly helped our local group shine! We also gained several new HCRW members.

The Alabama Strike Force (MASF) departed for Florida, October 25-30th to campaign for President Trump. HCRW had 10 to attend, (Linda Overton, Barbara Wheelless, Chuck & Martha Chavers, Hilda Hardy, Belinda Thomas, Susie Walthaus, Vicki Meade, Tess Ruiz and Lisa Johnston). Linda Overton was a leader and helped raise $20,000 for this worthy cause. The Mighty Alabama Strike Force (MASF) deployed again, this time to Georgia to help secure the Win of the 2 Senate Candidates in the January 5th Run Off Election. Four from our club participated December 27-31 (Linda Overton, Barbara Wheelless, Tess Ruiz and Hilda Hardy).

HCRW chose the 2020 recipient for the outstanding “Martha Foy Volunteer of the Year Award.” HCRW President Barbara Wheelless was announced as the recipient. Barbara joined HCRW in 2015 and stepped up to take the Secretary duties. She then became President in 2018 and is serving her second term. She is the Corresponding Secretary for Alabama FRW, and serves on the Alabama GOP Executive Committee. Always dependable, Barbara is always up to any challenge and excels in pulling “the best” from each member of the organization as we continue to grow in numbers. She is a great mentor. She is always there to get the job done and keep Our Team going in the right direction. She is a tireless worker for the conservative cause in our great country. Anyone would want Barbara on her team.
