Gorsuch a ‘Worthy Successor to Highly-Respected Scalia’
ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Today President Donald J. Trump announced Neil Gorsuch as his nominee for the Supreme Court. Gorsuch will fill the vacancy created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016.
“We applaud President Trump on his decision and congratulate him on naming a worthy successor to the highly respected Justice Scalia,” said National Federation of Republican Women President Carrie Almond. “Just as President Trump is already setting a course for a renewed, greater America, the historic selection of Gorsuch to the Supreme Court will protect and preserve our constitutional liberties for generations to come.”
Gorsuch, who currently serves on the Tenth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, is known as a champion of religious liberty and is considered to be an originalist in his interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. The native Coloradan earned degrees from Columbia, Harvard and Oxford, clerked for two Supreme Court justices, and worked in George W. Bush’s Justice Department. National Review describes Gorsuch as “a well-respected conservative whose legal philosophy is remarkably similar to that of Antonin Scalia.”
“Gorsuch is the justice America has been waiting for,” President Almond went on to say. “During the recent election, the American people clearly understood that the outcome would affect not just the presidency, but the direction of the Supreme Court as well. The NFRW commends Republican leadership in the Senate for holding the line to ensure the American people had their say before a new Supreme Court justice was seated.”
“There is no understating the importance of this selection and subsequent selections to the high court,” Almond said. “We experience daily our forefathers’ faith, genius and forethought in structuring the Constitution with checks and balances to protect the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all Americans.”
